About Jelani

Jelani Marques Shakir was a radiant presence whose smile and warmth welcomed everyone he met – whether he was laying down a verse in the studio, helping customers at Home Depot, gliding across the roller rink, or coaching a child on the basketball court. He was a gifted rapper and singer whose music carries his voice and spirit forward; a joyful skater who taught little ones to find their balance; and a devoted coach who gave his time freely to lift up youth. An extraordinary athlete, he was honoured in the Fairfax County Football Hall of Fame on the Congressional Record at just ten years old. His generosity reached beyond friends and family; he gave with particular compassion to people experiencing homelessness, always ready to offer practical help and human kindness. Everyone who worked with him or knew him felt the warmth of his great attitude and the strength of his giving heart.

We love Jelani with an immense, unending love that holds both the brightness of his laughter and the ache of his absence. Though he lost his battle with bipolar disorder, that struggle does not define the fullness of who he was – his courage, his joy, and his capacity to give remain. We will forever remember him through his music, his smile, and the countless small acts of kindness that marked his life. In his honour we commit to carrying forward his generosity: teaching, coaching, and serving others the way he did, so his light continues to shine in every life he touched.
